Gucci Announces Sudden Exit of Creative Director Sabato De Sarno

Gucci’s parent company Kering has announced the immediate departure of Sabato De Sarno as the brand’s Creative Director. The announcement, made on Thursday, comes just over a year after De Sarno was appointed to the role in January 2023.

In a press statement, Gucci confirmed the decision, stating, “Gucci today announces the end of its collaboration with Creative Director Sabato De Sarno. The fall-winter ’25 fashion show in Milan on February 25 will be presented by the Gucci design office.”

Leadership Shift at Gucci Amid Revenue Decline

De Sarno debuted his first collection during Milan Women’s Fashion Week in September 2023, but his tenure was short-lived. Gucci has not yet announced a successor, stating that the “new Artistic Direction will be announced in due time.”

Gucci CEO Stefano Cantino thanked De Sarno for his contributions, emphasizing his role in honoring the brand’s heritage. Kering’s Deputy CEO for Brand Development, Francesca Bellettini, also expressed gratitude, adding, “I sincerely thank Sabato for his loyalty and professionalism. I am proud of the work that has been done to further strengthen Gucci’s fundamentals.”

The leadership change comes as Kering faces significant financial challenges. In its Q3 earnings report, the company revealed a 26% year-over-year revenue decline at Gucci, with overall revenue dropping 15% to €3.8 billion ($3.9 billion). Kering also projected a 47% decline in company-wide operating income for fiscal 2024.

A Growing List of High-Profile Designer Exits

De Sarno’s exit adds to a growing trend of designer departures from major fashion houses. Other recent exits include Kim Jones, Hedi Slimane, John Galliano, and Pierpaolo Piccioli, signaling a period of transition in the luxury fashion industry.

With Gucci now searching for new creative leadership, the industry is watching closely to see who will shape the next chapter of the Italian fashion house.
