Atithi Studios, a cultural center in the Sharpsburg neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania founded by Sukanta Nag, promotes arts, music, and cultural exchange. In addition to regular art gallery openings and events, the center hosts various events throughout the year designed to build community and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of people around the globe and in our backyards.
Showcasing the Rich Diversity of the Latin Community
In September, Atithi hosted the Latin Festival 2024, where people from nearby communities enjoyed live music, cultural performances, art displays, and authentic dishes from various local Latin-based vendors. “People got to experience the joy and vibrancy of their Latin American neighbors and their rich contributions to culture in their hometown, “ said Sukanta Nag.
The event was organized with the support of Carolina Tapia, a visual artist who immigrated from Chile and is a member of the Pittsburgh Hispanic Development Corporation (PHDC). Both the PHDC and Nash kNOWledge were present to provide community awareness and resources.
Celebrating a Vibrant Indian Culture and Unity
In April, Atithi Studios held their annual Holi Festival, also known as the Festival of Colors. This revered Hindu festival celebrates the beginning of spring, new life and the triumph of good over evil. This year the festival also coincided with and included the Bengali New Year, a time of new beginnings.
The Festival of Colors featured various events for the community to enjoy and participate in. There was traditional music and dance, including a live performance by the Nandanik Dance Troupe showcasing India’s rich cultural heritage through choreography. The popular band Pothik Dot also entertained festivalgoers.
In addition, families enjoyed food and beverages and had an opportunity to participate in the iconic exchange of colors and the application of Mehndi, the traditional art of hand painting in India, by artist Kadambari.
Celebrating the Creative Voice of Women
Atithi Studios recently showcased *earth:Woman* in May, a remarkable exhibition curated by artist and photographer Adam Milliron. This inspiring display celebrated powerful women from around the world, featuring their clay works as a testament to their artistic vision, resilience, and unique voices in the creative community. It was a unique opportunity to see this never-before-seen collection.
Spotlighting Social Issues through Art
Atithi Studios also uses art to foster a deep understanding among the community of social issues. In August, the studio featured renowned Pittsburgh artist Michael Fratangelo’s Refugee exhibit – spiritually symbolic paintings inspired by the harrowing journey and dangerous risks migrants from North Africa take to cross the Mediterranean to Europe. “The celebration aims to foster a deeper understanding of the refugee experience through conversation and awareness,” said Sukanta Nag.
