Stan Polovets' diverse career and dedication to philanthropy have made the Genesis Prize a key player in honoring Jewish achievement and pride and driving global change.

Stan Polovets, a prominent figure in business and philanthropy, was born in the former Soviet Union and immigrated to the United States with his father at age 13. Money was scarce and he learned by example; his hardworking father was committed to helping others, and that inspired him to do the same. He was a dedicated student, earning an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business and an MA from Stanford in Russian and Eastern European Studies. The journey through his childhood and early adulthood shaped his worldview and laid the foundation for his future in corporate leadership and philanthropy.

Stan Polovets' career is marked by significant leadership roles in diverse industries where his strategic insights have consistently driven results. His professional journey began as a financial analyst at ExxonMobil, followed by roles at KPMG, and Ernst & Young. He served as a senior manager specializing in international mergers and acquisitions in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.

Polovets' expertise led him to found the Russian Petroleum Investor Group, where he served as CEO from 1992 to 2001. This placed him at the forefront of the Russian energy sector during a period of substantial transformation.

In 2001, Stan Polovets joined TNK, and in 2003 was instrumental in creating TNK-BP, one of the largest joint ventures in the global energy sector, controlling over 18% of Russia’s oil production. His role in this biggest corporate transaction in Russian history cemented his reputation as a leader capable of navigating complex international business environments. From 2003 until 2008, Polovets served as senior vice president and board member at TNK-BP and played a crucial role in significant improvements of the merged company in the areas of corporate governance, efficiency, and profitability.

From 2008 to 2013, Polovets led the AAR Consortium as its CEO, overseeing a global energy portfolio valued at over $25 billion. This role expanded his influence in the energy sector, demonstrating his ability to manage large-scale operations and drive strategic growth.

Polovets also held leadership positions at Edelman as chairman for Eastern Europe and at CLAL Industries as lead non-executive director. In 2020, he leveraged his leadership and management skills while serving as chairman of Nasdaq-listed Anchiano Therapeutics Ltd. where he oversaw a successful merger that yielded a 630% return for shareholders within a year.

Stan Polovets and the Genesis Prize Foundation: Honoring Jewish Identity and Global Impact

In 2013, Stan Polovets co-founded The Genesis Prize Foundation, an organization dedicated to honoring exceptional Jewish individuals that have made notable contributions to society while being proud of their Jewish identity. The Genesis Prize, referred to as the "Jewish Nobel" by Time, is awarded annually and comes with a $1 million prize, which recipients redirect to charitable causes. This model of high-impact giving has distinguished the Genesis Prize from other philanthropic awards.

“It is the only organization awarding an annual $1 million to an individual who does not take the money but turns around and invests it back into the community, often doubling or tripling the contribution through matching donors,” Stan Polovets explains. “This approach has been one of innovation, inclusivity, and agility in allowing Genesis Prize and its honorees the opportunity to find timely issues in need of philanthropic contribution and global attention.”

Under Polovets' leadership, the Genesis Prize has recognized individual achievements and become a platform for addressing pressing global issues. It’s generated over $50 million in grants, benefiting more than 200 nongovernmental organizations across 31 countries, impacting tens of thousands of beneficiaries.

The inaugural laureate of the Genesis Prize was Michael Bloomberg, former mayor of New York City, who was recognized in 2014 for his contributions to public service and philanthropy. Bloomberg used his prize funds to establish the Genesis Generation Challenge, a global competition designed to inspire young entrepreneurs to develop innovative solutions to social issues.

Subsequent laureates have continued this tradition of impactful giving. Oscar-winning actor Michael Douglas, recognized in 2015, used his prize money and the global platform provided by the Genesis Prize to advocate for the inclusion of intermarried families within Jewish communities, fostering a more inclusive and diverse environment. Renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman, who received the honor in 2016, directed his funds toward initiatives supporting people with disabilities, contributing to a more just society.

In 2017, artist Anish Kapoor was honored for his contributions to contemporary art and humanitarian efforts. Kapoor allocated his prize to address the global refugee crisis, bringing much-needed attention and resources to displaced populations.

The Genesis Prize Foundation introduced the Lifetime Achievement Award the following year, with the inaugural honor going to U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Ginsburg was celebrated for her trailblazing work in civil rights and women’s advocacy, and the prize funds were directed to initiatives supporting women's empowerment.

In 2019, the prize was awarded to New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who directed his million-dollar gift to initiatives combating antisemitism.

Natan Sharansky, a human rights activist, was recognized in 2020 for his lifelong advocacy of religious and political freedoms. Sharansky used his prize to support organizations that were helping vulnerable populations affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2021, filmmaker Steven Spielberg was recognized for his contributions to cinema and philanthropy. Spielberg directed his prize to organizations working toward racial and economic justice in the United States. The Genesis Prize Foundation also awarded Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021, honoring his inspirational work in interreligious and intercultural dialogue.

The following year, Pfizer's CEO Albert Bourla was awarded the Genesis Prize for his leadership in developing the COVID-19 vaccine. Bourla allocated his prize to support the establishment of a Holocaust museum in Thessaloniki, Greece, his ancestral home.

In 2023, the foundation honored Jewish activists and organizations providing critical support during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This recognition highlighted the Jewish community's commitment to humanitarian efforts and underscored the importance of global solidarity in times of crisis.

In 2024, the Prize honored Israeli NGOs and activists working to free hostages being held by Hamas and supporting their families. One of the goals of the award was to keep the plight of the hostages on the front pages of the news.

Also this year, the Genesis Prize celebrated its 10th anniversary by honoring Barbra Streisand. The iconic singer, actress, director, and author was recognized for her extraordinary artistic talents and activism for social justice causes worldwide. Streisand also chose to forgo the $1 million financial award, directing the funds to nonprofits focused on environmental protection, women's health, combating media disinformation, and supporting Ukraine. This purposeful allocation of funds encapsulates Streisand's holistic approach to philanthropy, reinforcing the foundation’s commitment to addressing global challenges through strategic giving.

As The Genesis Prize Foundation continues to evolve under Stan Polovets’ guidance, its influence on the Jewish community and the broader world is set to grow even further, inspiring future generations to contribute to society while staying true to their cultural roots.
