Tucked away on the serene beaches of Tulum, where turquoise waters meet the soft white sands of the Mexican Caribbean, lies Amansala, the Tripadvisor's Travelers´Choice Award winning eco-chic resort that not only offers true rejuvenation but a deep connection to nature. The visionary entrepreneur behind it, Melissa Perlman, has created much more than a peaceful retreat—she has woven her personal journey of transformation into the very fabric of Amansala.
But this story didn’t start with a business plan or a grandiose vision. It began with a simple, yet powerful question: "How do I want to live my life?
“After 9/11, I, like so many others, was questioning my life,” Melissa reflects. “I was living in New York, in a small studio, caught in the rat race. But I knew I didn’t want that anymore; I wanted something more meaningful.”
Melissa’s story is not one of overthinking or meticulous planning, but of following an instinct, a feeling that pulled her away from the concrete jungles of New York to the quiet shores of Tulum—at a time when few even knew its name. “People were like, ‘Where’s Tulum?’” she laughs. “Back then, it wasn’t the international destination it is today. It was a tiny pueblo with a single bakery and a chicken stand.”
Her journey began with a simple yet profound desire: to be by the ocean, to live a life that connected her with nature. “I didn’t have a grand plan. I just knew I wanted to live somewhere that felt like home to my soul,” Melissa recalls. And so, she packed up her New York life and traded it for the beaches of Tulum, a decision that many questioned, but one she never doubted.
Amansala, which translates to "peace waters," didn’t come into existence overnight. Much like a carefully tended garden, it grew slowly, organically. Melissa describes the early days as a labor of love. “I just wanted to create something I loved, plant the seeds, and see what would grow.”
But those seeds needed nurturing, and Melissa was the first to rise each morning and the last to rest, ensuring that every detail—from the soft glow of candles at dinner to the crisp linens on the beds—reflected the care and love she put into the place. Amansala became an extension of her own values: wellness, serenity, and authenticity.
As the resort grew, so did the connection Melissa felt to the land. “There’s something magical about Tulum. The energy here is unlike anywhere else. It felt like the right place to build something special,” she says. Over time, Amansala became more than a wellness resort—it became a sanctuary for those seeking peace, healing, and transformation.
For her, this is home; and while it hasn't always been smooth sailing, Melissa´s determination to keep moving forward, even when things got complicated has been an inspiration for many around her. She is quick to express her gratitude towards those who have been by her side through thick and thin. People like Darlene Sparling, whose passion and love for Amansala is palpable have helped the fearless entrepreneur find a way, or make a way. Here, it seems like everyone can find their calling and put their own personal skills and talents to good use, while living their best life.
Walking through Amansala is like stepping into a world where time slows down. The air smells of salt and fresh earth, and the sound of waves gently crashing on the shore lulls guests into a state of relaxation. From yoga classes at sunrise to traditional Mayan rituals, every experience is designed to help guests reconnect with themselves and the world around them.
