Miley Cyrus, the pop icon who once sang about being more than capable of buying herself flowers, has now earned one of the highest honors from the House of Mouse. Over the weekend, Cyrus was inducted as the youngest-ever Disney Legend at the D23 Expo, marking a full-circle moment for the artist who first rose to fame as the star of Hannah Montana.
During the Sunday ceremony, which closed out Disney’s annual convention, the 31-year-old performer reflected on her journey, declaring, “I stand here still proud to have been Hannah Montana.” Despite being a two-time Grammy winner and an A-list performer today, Cyrus acknowledged that her career began with the role she played on the beloved Disney Channel show from 2006 to 2011.
Introduced by country singer Lainey Wilson, who shared her own early experience as a Hannah Montana impersonator, Cyrus took the stage with humor and emotion. True to her word, she promised—and delivered—tears as she accepted the honor. “I’m definitely going to cry,” she said, before quipping about her so-called scandalous image that once challenged the squeaky-clean Disney kid stereotype.
“There was a buzz in that Burbank Disney office where it's rumored that they create all of us Disney Kids,” Cyrus joked. “I definitely wasn't created in a lab, but if I was, there must have been a bug in the system that caused me to malfunction somewhere between the years of 2013 and 2016.”
Cyrus was one of 14 honorees at the ceremony, joining a prestigious group that included Jamie Lee Curtis, Angela Bassett, Harrison Ford, Kelly Ripa, James Cameron, John Williams, and others. As she accepted the award, Cyrus offered a motivational message, sharing that even legends experience fear, but what makes them legendary is their ability to push forward despite it.
Far from distancing herself from her past, Cyrus embraced her star-making role as Hannah Montana, crediting the experience for helping her achieve her current success. “In so many ways, this award is dedicated to Hannah and all of her amazing loyal fans, and to everyone who has made my dream a reality,” she said. “To quote the legend herself, ‘This is the life.’”
