Barbie and Oppenheimer: Dual Victors at Golden Globes 2024, Dominating Awards Season

The 2024 Golden Globes saw the exceptional dominance of two films, "Oppenheimer" and "Barbie," collectively termed as 'Barbenheimer,' which together scooped a total of seven awards. The Christopher Nolan-directed biopic "Oppenheimer" led the pack with five accolades, including best drama, best actor in a drama for Cillian Murphy, best supporting actor in a drama for Robert Downey Jr., best director, and best original score.

"Barbie," on the other hand, claimed the best original song award for Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For,” standing out in a category where it had three nominations. Additionally, the film won the newly introduced box office category. Despite its success, "Barbie" missed out on best comedy/musical film and best actress in a comedy, both taken by "Poor Things," starring Emma Stone.

Heading into the event, "Barbie" had the edge with nine nominations, closely followed by "Oppenheimer" with eight. The Golden Globes 2024 also introduced a new award, the cinematic and box office achievement in motion pictures award, which highlighted both "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" among other big titles.

"Barbie," starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, not only became a box office sensation with earnings of $1.44 billion but also emerged as a critical darling, featuring in several top 10 movies-of-the-year lists and securing 11 Grammy nominations. Nolan’s "Oppenheimer," boasting a star-studded cast including Murphy, Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt, also achieved significant box office success with over $955 million in earnings and similar critical acclaim.

Downey Jr.’s win for best supporting actor in a drama set the tone early in the night, praising "Oppenheimer" as a “goddamn masterpiece.” The shared blockbuster opening weekend of both films has intertwined them in pop culture history, and as awards season progresses, their prospects in the Oscar race are increasingly promising, especially with the nominations voting just around the corner.
